To the Editor:

Kudos to Mr. Mahlon Meyer for his excellent analysis in "The Birth Of A New Taipei".
Owing to the remarkable efforts of its residents, Taipei has indeed transformed
most radically and wonderfully among its peers in Asia. Mr. Meyer was correct to
further point out that "this transformation has also been fueled by the same forces
that have driven Taiwan's democratic reforms. As native-born Taiwanese took control
of the government, they began to treat the capital as home, rather than simply a pit
stop on the way to retaking China." In fact, citizens demand for better policies and
infrastructure leading to a modern, civil society largely fell through deaf ears in the
past while KMT enjoyed monopoly of Taiwan's political landscape. It wasn't until the
native-born Chen Shui-bian became the city mayor in 1994 when such policies began
to be instituted and enforced in earnest. The main driving force behind Taipei's recent
transformation is the combination of the "nativization" of the government and the
empowerment of its citizens. Mr. Meyer's keen observation finds countless testimonials
from long time residents of Taipei such as myself.

It's rather ironic that ChinaTimes completely omitted the above key points when citing
Mr. Meyer's report on March 6, 2001 https:///news.chinatimes.com/Chinatimes/newscontent/newscontent/0,1058,1120010
30601853+11050601+20010306,00.htmlj. Instead, its "partially" translated version misled the readers to think that Mr. Meyer
believed the transformation owed its success to the government's(KMT) lifting of martial
law in 1987.

I feel the need to bring to your attention such blatant distortion and disrespect for
journalistic authenticity. As a reader, I can understand that ChinaTimes needs to take a
pro-KMT editorial stand as it is closely affiliated with KMT party heavy weights both
financially and politically. However, when it comes to news reporting, certain ethical
standard still needs to be observed. A rebuttal (and correction) from Mr. Meyer, the
original source, might be in need.

Respectfully,
